GuysLikeU regular Matt Oakes opens about people’s prudish views on sex.
Let’s talk about sex. Seriously! Although each generation seems to be more and more open to sex and sexuality, every now and then it still becomes apparent that sex can still be a taboo subject that people are uncomfortable talking about. Don’t get me wrong I’m not saying we should all share our intimate details with one another, but simple things, like discussing fetishes and fantasies and what might work or might not in the bedroom – surely this is all helpful advice we shouldn’t be ashamed to pass on or even ask about.
Recently I got criticised that some of my pictures on Instagram were too risqué and even more surprisingly this came from a friend who I always believed to be very open minded. This just got me thinking about how being confident in your own body and owning your own sexuality can still be looked upon as a negative thing. Shouldn’t we all be proud of our bodies and not be afraid to let your sexuality show?
For me I never see any of my pictures as a sexual thing but a confidence thing, and I am always happy to discuss matters regarding sex, past exploits and situations. Maybe I’m in the minority and just too open minded about such things. But I find it very empowering to be able to discuss sex and share my pictures – it doesn’t have to be a sexual thing. It certainly helped me be more comfortable in my own skin and I certainly have learnt a lot from others when discussing sex.
To me, this is a huge thing that would help younger guys become more confident in their sexuality when coming out or looking for advice. Knowing that sex isn’t something taboo or to be ashamed of surely would help coming to terms with your own sexuality and more importantly let them explore new ideas and be educated on them.
I wish I had been able to discuss the realities of sex before my first time as I was clueless and only had the unrealistic world of porn to go on. I didn’t even have a clue what a top or a bottom was! It ended up in what I can only describe as a 30 minute wrestling session, followed by what felt like an intense yoga workout…and we didn’t even have sex!
We should be proud of who we are and not be afraid to show some confidence when it comes to sex, whether it be posting a picture, discussing sex with friends or even offering some advice to someone. Never be ashamed of who you are and what you love.
